Because the Best Adventures Are the Ones Shared with Your Kids
Travelling with children is one of the most rewarding โ and yes, sometimes challenging โ things you can do as a family. We’ve been doing it for years and we’re passionate about making it as smooth, fun, and memory-making as possible. Here’s everything we’ve learned.
๐ Why Travel with Kids?
People often ask us, “Isn’t it too hard to travel with kids?” Our answer is always the same: travelling with children is not harder โ it’s just different. And the rewards are immeasurable. Watching your child encounter a different culture, taste a new food, or make a friend despite a language barrier is one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever witness as a parent.
๐ง Education
Travel is the greatest classroom. Kids learn history, geography, science, languages, and empathy in ways no textbook can replicate.
๐ Perspective
Children who travel grow up understanding that there are many ways to live, eat, celebrate, and see the world โ and that’s a gift for life.
โค๏ธ Family Bonds
Shared experiences โ especially adventures outside the daily routine โ create the strongest family memories. These are the stories you’ll tell forever.
๐ Our Top Tips for Travelling with Kids
1. ๐ค Involve Them in the Planning
Let kids choose one or two things they really want to do at each destination. When they have ownership over part of the trip, they’re more engaged and excited throughout. Show them the map, look at pictures together, and build the anticipation. The planning is half the fun!
2. ๐ข Slow Down Your Pace
Adults can power through a packed itinerary; kids cannot. Our golden rule: do fewer things, but do them properly. Two or three highlights a day is plenty. Leave room for spontaneity โ some of our best travel memories have come from stumbling upon something unexpected because we weren’t rushing to the next thing on a list.
3. ๐ Be Flexible About Food
Even the most adventurous young foodies have days where they just want something familiar. Always have snacks. Know which local foods are likely to be hits (bread, rice, noodles โ most kids will eat these anywhere). Don’t stress if they don’t try everything โ cultural immersion through food comes gradually, and today’s refusal is often tomorrow’s favourite.
4. ๐ค Protect Sleep & Rest Time
Overtired children make travel difficult for everyone. We always build downtime into our days โ a rest after lunch, a quiet afternoon every few days, or a slow morning with no agenda. Rested kids are happy kids. And happy kids make for happy parents.
5. ๐ญ Make It an Adventure, Not a Chore
Kids respond brilliantly to being given roles and responsibilities. Make them the “navigator” with the map, the “photographer” with the camera, or the “chief food taster” at each new restaurant. Frame challenges as adventures: “We’re explorers trying to find our way!” rather than “We’re lost again.”
6. ๐งธ Bring Comfort Items
A favourite stuffed animal, a small blanket, a familiar book โ these small pieces of home go a long way in unfamiliar environments, especially for younger children. They also help enormously at bedtime in hotel rooms and on long flights.
7. ๐ฑ Screen Time Is Fine on Travel Days
Travel days are not normal days. Download new content โ movies they haven’t seen, new episodes of favourite shows, new apps and games. Save these specifically for travel days so they feel special and keep kids entertained during long journeys. The regular screen time rules can resume when you arrive.
๐บ๏ธ Age-by-Age Travel Guide
๐ถ Babies & Toddlers (0โ3)
The truth: Babies are actually easier to travel with than you think! They don’t need to “do” things โ they just need you, food, sleep, and comfort.
- Book bulkhead seats for extra legroom and bassinets on long flights
- Stick to nap schedules as closely as possible
- Pack double the nappies/diapers you think you’ll need
- Baby carriers are invaluable for sightseeing
- Beach destinations are perfect โ endless entertainment in the sand
๐ง Young Kids (4โ8)
The sweet spot: Old enough to remember experiences, young enough to be utterly amazed by everything. This is magical travel age.
- Interactive experiences (cooking classes, animal encounters) are big hits
- Give them their own small backpack โ teaches responsibility
- Travel journals with stickers help them document and remember
- Many museums and attractions are free for this age group
- Keep days varied โ mix active and relaxed activities
๐ง Tweens & Teens (9โ17)
The challenge and reward: Older kids have opinions, which means planning requires more negotiation โ but also more genuine connection.
- Give them real decision-making power over some activities
- Let them navigate using their own phone โ builds confidence
- Adventure activities (zip lining, kayaking, hiking) are huge hits
- Food exploration becomes a genuine shared interest
- Consider involving them in the travel budget โ great financial lesson
